We’ve all read the very sad stories of cases such as a young girl who is terribly allergic to peanuts dying after kissing her boyfriend, who had just eaten a Snickers bar with peanuts in it, or a person with a corn allergy who goes into anaphylactic shock and dies after unknowingly eating something with just a minute amount of corn in it. Food allergies, from deadly severe to very mild are well documented. It is also well documented that food allergies can manifest in some people as eczema.

Let’s say you have eczema and you know that you are allergic to tomatoes, so you eliminate tomatoes from your diet, but your eczema doesn’t improve, or maybe improves just a little bit. What’s going on here? The obvious answer is that you are probably allergic to more than tomatoes. Okay, so you get a battery of allergy tests and eliminate all of the allergens you tested positive for from your diet. Your eczema still doesn’t improve much. What’s the dang deal?

It’s possible that you are allergic to external elements, such as pet dander, molds, or pollens, but those would have also shown up in your allergy tests and you would have taken steps to eliminate them to the maximum extent possible, yet your eczema still flares up. You could still have undetected food allergies, but at a much more subtle, systemic level.

The vast majority of the produce we eat is sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and artificial fertilizers. Most of the cattle that produce the beef we eat have been treated with bovine growth hormones. The cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and farm-raised fish are given high doses of antibiotics to keep disease in check. These chemicals don’t magically disappear when the animals are processed or the produce harvested; they aren’t rendered inert. You consume them, in small quantities to be sure, but year after year, they can build up in your body. Look at the ingredients on some of the processed foods you eat. They contain artificial ingredients with very long, very unpronounceable names, and they also build up in your body over time.

If your eczema hasn’t improved after removing the obvious allergens from your diet, chances are very good that you are allergic to one or more of the host of toxins that have built up in your body. It would be prohibitively expensive in terms of time and money to try to identify every toxin in your body and then test for an allergy to them. What can you do?

Eat organic. Organic foods don’t contain the toxins mentioned earlier. Yes, they are more expensive than non-organic foods, but what is the price of your health? You might also consider doing a cleanse to start eliminating the toxins from your body. Talk to your health care provider to determine your best course of action. The link between eczema and diet is often very subtle, but you can moderate or even eliminate your eczema symptoms if you begin with some of the steps outlined here.

Some time ago you noticed an itchy, scaly patch on your chest. You thought it was “just a rash” and it would go away, but it didn’t. The patch got bigger and the itching got worse so you finally went to a doctor and the diagnosis was eczema. “Doc, give me the magic pill to cure it and I’ll get on with my life.” “No cure, no magic pill” was the reply. “What’s going on here?” you wonder. “I thought eczema only happened in babies and I’m WAY past that. Why now? Why me? What did I do to deserve this?”

You thought eczema was just a condition in babies, but you have just been diagnosed with it and you don’t know where it came from and what to do about it. You didn’t just suddenly develop eczema as an adult. Approximately 95% of eczema sufferers developed it before the age of 5, most likely before the age of 1. It is a chronic condition, but the reason you haven’t noticed it before is that it can go into remission for months, even years.

Eczema is generally hereditary. Does anyone on either side of your family have eczema? Do your mother, father, aunts, uncles, grandmother, grandfather suffer from hay fever, asthma, or allergies? Do you suffer from them as well? Ask your parents if you had a rash as a baby. Those are your links. And it’s most common in males, so if you’re a guy, you get the double door prize!

You know you have eczema, you now are pretty sure why you have it, but what caused it to flare up now? That’s not an easy question to answer. Allergies are a leading cause of eczema. You may be allergic to one or many things, some of which could cause your flare up. Our bodies change over time and what you weren’t sensitive to as a younger person you may be sensitive to now. Stress has been shown to exacerbate eczema symptoms and as an adult you’re probably under a lot more stress than you were as a child. The economy, your job, your own kids – tell me you don’t have stress.

There is some good news here. Even though you have adult eczema, there are many things you can do to moderate or even eliminate your symptoms. The first step is to understand what triggers are causing your flare ups. Once you understand your triggers, you can choose from lotions and medications to relieve the itching. You can eliminate allergens from your environment. You can change your diet if necessary. You can learn to reduce the stress in your live. In short, you don’t have to just live with your symptoms. You can find relief.

There are a lot of eczema treatments and “cures” out there. Some work, some don’t. I have tried Beat Eczema and it is working for me. Click on the banner below to give it a look.

As you sit at your desk, trying to get some work done and trying to ignore that growing itchy feeling on your shoulder or wishing the patches on the back of your hand would go away, do you find yourself shouting out inside, “What the hell did I do to deserve this?” I know I do. Why do I have it, what did I do to get it, and when will it go away?

We didn’t do anything to deserve it. There are estimates that around 17% of Americans suffer from eczema to a greater or lesser degree. Doesn’t it make you feel better knowing that you have so much company? Didn’t think so; doesn’t make me feel any better either. We probably have it because of heredity (Thanks, Mom! Thanks, Dad!), which means we didn’t do anything in particular to get it. When will it go away? Possibly never. You would think that with so many of us suffering from eczema, the medical profession would have found a cure by now, but they haven’t. All they can do is treat the symptoms. For me, it’s just one more piece of proof about how little the medical profession really knows about the human body, despite what they may say to the contrary.

OK, we have it. What causes it and how do we deal with it? Allergies or skin sensitivities are major causes of eczema. You need to be very aware of what you are doing when you have a flare up. Did you eat something in particular? Did you wear a certain shirt or blouse? Were you hot and sweaty? Did it happen when you went out in the cold? You get the idea. Once you figure out your triggers, you can avoid them. For example, my eczema flares up if I drink white wine, so I no longer have that glass of Chardonnay in the evening. Lucky me!

If you can’t avoid the triggers, then you can at least moderate them. If cold, dry weather sets you off, moisturize your skin religiously. This will lessen the itching due to dry skin. If a particular piece of clothing irritates you, maybe it’s the fabric and you need to avoid it. Maybe it’s the detergent you wash your clothes with. Try changing to a more natural product for awhile, such as Seventh Generation or Biokleen.

Even there is no cure per se, we can be successful enough in controlling the flare ups that for all practical purposes it will seem like we are “cured”. There are, unfortunately, some people who, if they can’t have the silver bullet, magical cure, just say, “Screw it,” and don’t do anything for themselves. Don’t you be like that! There are lots of things we can do to moderate our symptoms, and I don’t know about you, but the simple act of just doing something makes me feel better.

To your good health!

Your doctor told you, “It’s eczema,” or you figured it out by doing your own research. What are you going to do now? You could do like I did, say, “Aw crap!” and try to ignore it, hoping it will go away, or you can take action, which I finally did after a year or so. But, what action are you going to take?

The first thing you should do is figure out what’s causing your eczema. Unfortunately, this may not be an easy task. There are many causes, from allergies, to contact with certain chemicals, to the changing climate throughout the year. Determining the cause may take some time and it will probably involve lots of trial and error.

It’s helpful to keep a journal. I know, it sounds tedious – and it is – but when you have flare ups you can’t rely on your memory to accurately remember what you were doing and when you were doing it when the flare up occurred. After I started keeping tabs on my condition, I finally figured out that my eczema got worse starting in mid-October, when the fall and winter air starts getting dryer.

Once you think you have found something that triggers a flare up, try to avoid it. That’s sometimes easier said than done, especially if you find that your eczema flares up when Fido sits on your lap. If you seem flared up all the time and can’t find a specific trigger, maybe it’s the clothes you wear, or more specifically, what you wash your clothes with. Most laundry detergents contain a whole host of harsh chemicals. You might consider switching to laundry products with more natural ingredients. For example, Seventh Generation has a very good line of natural laundry and cleaning products.

While you’re trying to determine what’s causing your eczema, you’re still suffering, so get some immediate relief by moisturizing your skin with soothing lotions or creams. There are a lot of eczema home remedies available that won’t cost you an arm and a leg, so experiment until you find something that works for you.

Antihistamines and anti-itch creams can also prove effective. Anti-itch creams are topical and should be applied carefully and only to the area you want to treat. Antihistamines are designed to treat allergies, which can actually be a cause of eczema. They help stop the itch, as well as clear up rashes and hives. If you use them, I recommend using them sparingly since they can have some unwanted side effects and you body will also eventually build up a tolerance to them.

A big, big thing is to not feel like a victim and dwell on “Why me?” like I did for awhile. That doesn’t do you any good and it simply delays the day when you will find relief from your adult eczema – and you will find relief. In the meantime, you will feel so much better if you have a take-charge attitude.

There are a lot of eczema treatments and “cures” out there. Some work, some don’t. I have tried Beat Eczema and it is working for me. Click on the banner below to give it a look.

Because a lot of eczema symptoms can be linked to built up toxins in our bodies, a lot of eczema treatments recommend doing a cleanse to flush out the toxins and prepare the body for the actual treatment. If you’ve never done a cleanse before, you could be in for a shock . I found this really good article on what you can expect when you start a cleanse.

Incidently, this site has a lot good information on natural health issues, everything from H1N1 to deaths by properly prescribed pharmaceuticals. After you read this post, check out the site. It’s Live a More Natural Life. I think you’ll find it very interesting.

—————————————————————

You Thought a Detox Cleanse Would Make You Feel Good – Why Do You Feel Like Crap?

We are exposed to chemicals and toxins on a daily basis, at work, at home, in the air we breathe, the food we eat,and the water we drink. As the public becomes more aware of the toxins that reside in their bodies through pollutants such as heavy metals pesticides, etc., and inadequate nutrition because of poor diets there is a growing interest in detoxification protocols and cleanses.

Do a Google search on “cleanse”. There are almost 15,000,000 results! There are body cleanses, liver cleanses, colon cleanses, cleansing diets, juice fasts, detox recipes, on and on. It is a vast subject – and big business.

So, you’ve done some research, maybe bought a packaged cleanse off the Internet or at your local health food store, or gotten a diet book on various types of cleanses, and started off full speed ahead. You’re a couple of days into the protocol and you feel really, really rotten. You have headaches, your energy is low, perhaps you’re suffering some diarrhea. You’re wondering if this cleansing stuff is just so much hype because you’re supposed to feel better than when you started, not worse. You’re ready to chuck it all and go back to your old ways.

Actually, in all probability the cleanse is working exactly as it should and what you are feeling is probably a Herksheimer’s reaction. Herksheimer’s reaction is a term that describes the principle that you get worse before you get better when using, for example, an antibiotic or other health solution. This is due to the releasing of toxins as the body responds to the remedy. Many people have a lot of bugs and toxins in their system and if you kill them off too quickly, you will get a Herksheimer’s reaction (weakness, nausea, etc.).

The safest solution is to work with your ND or health care professional to ensure you suffer minimal adverse side effects when you start your cleansing regimen. If you’re going it alone, follow the directions for the cleanse you have chosen to the letter. If you get a strong Herksheimer’s reaction, you should probably cut down on the dosage or spread the cleanse out over a longer time period. Of course, if adverse symptoms persist, see your health care professional.

Cleanses do work, but not all cleanses are suitable to all people. Remember, too, the toxins in your body didn’t accumulate overnight, so don’t expect to feel at the top of your game the day after you start a cleanse.

If you decide to try natural medicine to relieve your eczema symptoms, what kinds of treatments can you expect? Will they be short term or long term in nature? What side effects will natural medicines have?

Atopic eczema, or atopic dermatitis – the terms are used interchangeably – is the most common of various eczemas, with up to an estimated 20 percent of the worldwide population being affected. There is no cure and its causes are not well understood, but it is linked together with hay fever and asthma, and is heredity in nature. It is a chronic condition whose symptoms can increase or decrease over time. Though there is no cure, it can be treated using traditional or natural medical protocols.

The first step in determining a treatment protocol is to get a diagnosis of the skin condition. If the diagnosis is atopic eczema, then the next step is probably to get a blood test to identify possible allergens. You’ll want to test for both immediate (IgE) and delayed (IgG) food or environmental allergies. Once you have the results of the blood tests you can work with a naturopathic doctor to implement a treatment plan.

Often, a natural treatment plan will begin with a cleanse, since the body can be loaded with toxins, compromising your immune system’s ability to fight allergens. There is no “one size fits all” cleanse, so again, it is wise to work with your naturopathic doctor to determine which cleansing protocol is best for the body systems targeted for cleansing.

If food and environmental allergens have been identified, the most obvious natural treatment for eczema is to eliminate those allergens from your diet or environment. This may require some detective work on your part. For example, if it turns out you’re allergic to peanuts but your eczema flairs up when you have beef and broccoli from your favorite Chinese take-out place, it could be because the food is cooked in peanut oil.

As your body adjusts to its new diet and life free from internal toxins, you will still probably have the red, itching skin. Your naturopath will recommend topical creams that don’t contain any pharmaceutical corticosteroids, so these creams can be used without fear of side effects associated with steroids.

In the broadest sense, treating eczema naturally, using natural protocols will involve lifestyle changes. Some of these changes may come easily for you, some may not, since habits engrained for years are hard to break. Results also may not be immediate, which can be frustrating, especially with traditional medicine promising “right now” relief of your symptoms. But remember, with natural medicine, you’re addressing the root causes of your eczema, not just treating the symptoms. By following a natural medical protocol you will see improvement in your condition, maybe even what I like to call “permanent remission” and you will enjoy a higher quality of life in the bargain.

—————————————————————-

There are a lot of eczema treatments and “cures” out there. Some work, some don’t. I have tried Beat Eczema and it is working for me. Click on the banner below to give it a look.

Homeopathy and Eczema in Children

Eczema is a common skin disorder observed in children. Treating eczema is a challenging task for pediatrics as a child’s skin is very sensitive and conventional therapy often worsens the condition. However, homeopathic remedy for eczema has several advantages over conventional therapy. Read on to know more.

Eczema is a skin disorder which is characterized by itching and irritation. A form of eczema, atopic dermatitis is mostly observed in children. There are many causes of eczema, such as food, pollen, dust mite, mold, pet dander etc. Eczema causes the skin to become red, dry, patchy and covers it with scales and boils. The severity of the symptoms vary from person to person. Though, the occurrence of eczema is on and around the face, it can affect other parts of the body as well. Eczema affects babies, children and adults alike. However, when it comes to treating babies and children, pediatrics have to be extra careful. Most skin creams and lotions burn the sensitive skin of children and do more damage than good. Eczema research has shown that homeopathy has become the preferred way of treating eczema.

Homeopathy for Treating Eczema in Children

Homeopathy and eczema in children is quite a debatable topic. Though a few may swear by its success, most people still doubt its effectiveness. However, homeopathic medicines are unlikely to worsen the condition, since they are made from extracts of natural ingredients and are diluted to the degree sustainable for children. Homeopathy works according to the symptoms and not conditions. This approach works well as diseases manifest different symptoms among different people. The symptoms exhibited by every individual help identify their group type and thus, corresponding homeopathic medicine can be prescribed.

Before starting homeopathic treatment, the medical history of the child has to be checked. In case, the child is born with eczema or the condition developed soon after birth, inherited tendency or predisposition has to be looked for. The various types of homeopathic medicines that have met with success in treating child eczema are antimonium crudum, arsenicum album, arum triphyllum, calcarea carbonica, calendula, graphites, hepar sulphuris calcareum, mezereum, rhus toxicodendron, petroleum and sulphur.

The symptoms of eczema may aggravate due to change in diet, antibiotics or vaccination. Though steroids can sometimes help to get rid of eczema from the skin, they often induce side effects, such as respiratory or digestion problems. In such cases, sulfur is used as a homeopathic remedy. Sulfur helps to clean the eczema and restore the balance.

If a child is born with eczema or has a family history of eczema, inherited susceptibility becomes important. For such children, tuberculinum bovinum is a homeopathic remedy which strengthens the immune system and reduces susceptibility. The decreased susceptibility helps the body to heal naturally. Alumina is a homeopathic remedy recommended for children who have a craving for food that has the potential for aggravating eczema. Most food that children crave for are often the cause of constipation. Alumina relieves the child of constipation and thus gets rid of all skin problems.

Steroid treatment has to be ceased completely before starting homeopathic treatment. During initial phases of homeopathic treatment, the symptoms may seem to worsen, but that is an indication that the treatment is working. The first step of the medicine is to flush the body of substances that cause the skin problems. Cleansing the body from within restores the skin and eczema subsides eventually.

As mentioned before, the homeopathic remedy for eczema depends upon the symptoms, hence the child is prescribed a medicine that is likely to work for his symptoms. If it fails to work, another one can be tried. However, if the medicine works in the first instance, it should be continued until the occurrence of eczema subsides completely. Though homeopathic treatment often takes longer time than the conventional therapy, it produces better results.
